Dr. Prabhakar Shetty

Dr. Prabhakar G. Shetty was the first man to hearken to the words of Marchal de Calvi's(1864 - Surgeon) immortal words:
" Having amputed one leg,often the opposite leg is affected, gangrene sets in and soon the patients succumbs to the horrible suffering. Having relieved him of his local affliction (by amputation), I have done nothing but mutilate him."

Dr. Prabhakar G. Shetty realised soon enough that amputation of the affected part, without improving the flow of blood to the affected limb proved to be a futile exercise although it was life saving at times.

He devised a method of cure by way of which the flow of blood to the affected limbs improved dramatically largely due to the establishment of collateral vessels which were the off shoots of the primary large blood vessels which were blocked especially in cases of Diabetes.

Dr. Shetty carries on his wonderful work of giving a new life to the people who were otherwise resigned to their fate of inevitable amputation as a cost of keeping them alive.

Till date he has saved 2528 persons from major amputations(below knee and above knee). Dr. Shetty however maintains that prevention is better than cure and urges suffering humanity especially each and every person afflicted with diabetes to seek help earlier on, before gangrene sets in.
