Parkinson's disease :: Drug effects on heart

Researchers at the University of Toronto at Dallas have found that a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease elevates blood levels of an amino acid that could put patients at higher risk of heart disease.

Doctors suspect that the drug levodopa, used for the past 40 years, can elevate body levels of the amino acid homocysteine, which is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, said Dr Ramon Diaz-Arrastia.
