Asthmatic Children at School
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways in which many cells play a role, in particular mast cells, eosinophils and T lymphocytes. In susceptible individuals this inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and cough particularly at night and/or in the early morning.

Asthma :: Asthmatic Children at School

If your child has asthma, the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver suggests you make sure the school is properly alerted to your child's condition:

- Ask your doctor for a written action plan for the school. This should include your child's asthma medications, emergency telephone numbers, and a list of things that make your child's asthma worse.

- Give a peak flow meter, spacer and rescue medicine to the school nurse.

- Have your child or a teacher take medicines along on field trips in case of flare-ups.

- Keep in touch with school staff about managing your child's asthma, even if everything appears to be fine.
