Natural collagen, which is a protein that supports the skin and gives it tone, is gradually lost as time passes leading to facial lines and wrinkles.

Zyderm and Zyplast are made from purified bovine collagen and are indicated for the correction of contour deficiencies of soft tissue. After injection the suspended collagen forms a network, takes on the texture and the appearance of normal tissue and is responsible for restoring contour. Zyderm and Zyplast can be used to correct lines, crows feet and to enhance lip shape.

Depending on the area to be treated, a number of injections will be required, followed by a period of massage to the treated area. Zyderm and Zyplast both contain a low concentration of Lidnocaine local anaesthetic, so this will reduce any discomfort to a minimum. However, with lip enhancement treatments, additional local anaesthetic may be required initially.

There are alternative treatments to collagen, and these include: hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Perlane, botulinum toxin, chemical peels, laser treatments, surgical treatments, or indeed, no treatment at all.
