Health is a unity and harmony within the mind, body and spirit which is unique to each person, and is as defined by that person. The level of wellness or health is, in part, determined by the ability to deal with and defend against stress. Health is determined by physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, spiritual, and developmental stage variables.

Hartmut “Hucky” Land, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Genetics, will give a talk titled “Construction and Deconstruction of Cancer Cells,” as part of a lecture series highlighting biological and biomedical research at the University of Rochester.
Land will lead a discussion at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, in the Adolph Auditorium (1-7619). The talk is the latest installment of the “Second Fridays Science Social” for faculty, staff and students at the University, although the public is welcome to attend. The lectures are free. More information is available at: http://www.urmc.edu/sss/index.html
In the mid1980s, Land was among the scientists that first discovered the collaboration of multiple gene mutationsin cancer. Since then his work has focused on the complex interplay of cancer genes underlying malignancy. Based on this research he and his team have been investigating approaches to identify genes essential for the cancer phenotype downstream of cancer gene mutations, with the aim to discover rational paths to intervention. Land is scientific director of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
