Homeopathy (also spelled homœopathy or homoeopathy), from the Greek words homoios (similar) and pathos (suffering), is a system of alternative medicine, notable for its controversial practice of prescribing water-based solutions that do not contain chemically active ingredients. The theory of homeopathy was developed by the Saxon physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843) and first published in 1796.

Students of homoeopathy tried to attack the house of the former director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, P M Bhargava to protest against his statement that homeopathy was not a valid system of medicine and that its medicines were no more than mere placebos.

A group of students first went to the CCMB campus and vandalised the gate. They left when told that Bhargava had retired. They then went to his house a few kilometres away and besieged it. They raised slogans against the scientist and demanded an apology from him. The students were dispersed by police who responded to Bhargava's? complaint.
