Gardasil :: Gardasil vaccine use by gay a waste of money

UK gay men, who are demanding vaccine Gardasil, may be wasting their money because Gardasil vaccine protects men from genital warts and genital cancers if they get the jab early in their sexual life before coming into contact with a person who has HPV.

In UK increasing numbers of gay men are requesting a vaccine – HPV vaccine – which protects against a sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical, penile and anal cancers, reported by Cancer Research UK. One Harley Street clinic told the BBC that dozens of men have each paid ?450 for the three-dose course of the vaccine in recent weeks.

“It’s their money and their choice,” said Professor Frazer, who was responding to reports that homosexuals in the UK had been demanding the vaccine. “But the reality is that adult males who have sex with other males, and who have been in anything other than a monogamous relationship, are very unlikely to benefit.” (Reported by News Limited)

Gardasil protects against the sexually transmitted infection, human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer, genital warts and other genital cancers. In the UK, US and Australia it is approved for use in females and males aged 9 to 26, with Australian women due to get free immunisations from April.

“Being vaccinated with GARDASIL before coming into contact with a person who has HPV can help protect you against HPV Types 6 and 11?the types of HPV that cause most cases of genital warts” says Merck.
