1. Immunity :: The ins and outs of how neutrophils combat microbes
Immune cells known as neutrophils produce reactive oxygen intermediates (ROIs) to combat infection with microbes that can cause diseases such as pneumonia. New insight into the molecular pathway regulating neutrophil production of ROIs in mice has been provided by Wojciech Swat and colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis.

A group of scientists, led by mathematicians, has taken on the challenge of building a common model of immune responses. 5. Diabetes :: Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids associated with decreased risk of type 1 diabetes
Preliminary research suggests that in children at increased risk for type 1 diabetes, dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a reduced risk of pancreatic islet autoimmunity, which is linked to the development of diabetes, according to an article in the Sept. 26 issue of JAMA.
